Hostess Without the Mostess

Last week, Lucy invited two friends from her preschool class over to play. She has been wanting to do this for quite some time, and I finally got my act together to coordinate with the other moms. It was Lucy’s first official play date with just her friends. Obviously, we have had a zillion play dates in the past, but they have all been with friends of mine and their kids, friends of Audrey’s that happen to have younger siblings Lucy’s age, etc. So this was a big deal for Lucy. She was so excited. (Audrey, on the other hand, thought it was “kind of strange” that Lucy was having kids over that she “doesn’t even know.”) Lucy talked about it for days and days. She even had a little agenda of what she wanted to play with the girls.

The morning arrived. One girl’s mom texted to say the little brother was sick, so she just dropped off her daughter and did not stay for the play date. The other girl’s mom decided to stay to chat with me and let her younger two join in the play date.

All the kids were upstairs playing in the girls’ bedroom when one of the girls came down and said, “Yeah, um, Lucy’s mom? Lucy said I’m being rude. Because I said she is being rude.”

So I went upstairs to investigate this alleged debate over who was being rude. Turns out, Lucy most definitely earned the title of Rudest. Why, you ask? Well, I found the hostess of the play date alone in my bedroom with the door closed, lying on my bed and playing a game on my iPad. Umm.

“Lucy! What are you doing in here?”

“Whew. I just needed a break.”

“Well, you can’t really take a ‘break’ when you have friends over. That’s not how it works. Please go back to your friends. They want to play with you SINCE YOU INVITED THEM OVER TO YOUR HOUSE.”

“Maybe in a little bit.”

“Uh, no. How about now?”

She slithered off the bed, tears welling in her eyes. I gently shoved her back into her room where her friends were anxiously awaiting her return. (Although I don’t know why they even wanted her to come back. Seriously, who does that??)

An hour went by, and the other mom and I decided to head upstairs to check on everyone. All of the girls were playing with Lucy’s collection of baby dolls. Lucy was under a blanket on her bed, flipping through Frog and Toad.

I whispered to her, “Lucy, why aren’t you playing with your friends?”

“Well. I certainly don’t like what they are doing to Rosie and PurpleBaby. They changed all their outfits to things that don’t match and that I don’t let my babies wear.”

“Ok. I’m sorry that’s bothering you, but that’s what happens when you have friends over. They play with your toys, and when they leave, you can have everything all back to the way you like it. But for now, you need to play with them.”

“UGH. When I’m done with this book.”

??????

I don’t know, folks. It could be safe to say that was Lucy’s first and last play date. Her social graces as a hostess are highly questionable. Hostess without the Mostess, indeed.
